Hello! I’m Ronnie Benion! I’m a recent graduate from the University of Texas at Austin where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in African & African Diasporic Studies. I’m originally from New Orleans, LA and moved to Houston, TX post-Hurricane Katrina. I’m an avid reader, a music fanatic, and a singer-songwriter. I’m currently pursing a career in Student Affairs.
I took the stage on June 30th, 1992 and I haven’t left the spotlight since. I grew up as the youngest of 3 children on my mom’s side and the second oldest of 4 on my dad’s side. In total I have 4 sisters and a brother. I love my family. My mom is my world. She’s taught me so much about life. Not to mention we have very similar personalities except mine is the toned down version of hers.
I’m a brother (now Alumnus) of an amazing fraternity Delta Lambda Phi. I crossed into brotherhood with 9 amazing men on December 4th, 2010 as a member of the Epsilon-Hall pledge class. I love my brothers and my chapter (Beta Rho)! This organization has truly made my college experience wonderful. I’ve learned so much about others and myself. My brothers are some of my biggest supporters and without them I’d be lost.
I began playing the guitar at the age of 19. I’ve sang my entire life but really wanted to see what I could do. I wrote my first song “Wanting You” after one month of playing and still consider it one my favorite songs. Within the same year of me starting to play, I began to book shows and play for money around Austin. Singing is where I feel the most vulnerable but also the strongest.
My student affairs journey began my sophomore year of college when I was the Public Relations chair for my residence hall council as well as the Pledge/Fraternity Educator for my fraternity. Those were the first time I really had the opportunity to work with students. The next, I became an Resident Assistant followed by Senior Resident Assistant for my senior year. I love working with students, especially seeing them grow and progress. This coming summer I will be an Orientation Advisor for the UT Class of 2018. Following the end of the summer, I will be taking a year off to work and prepare to apply to grad programs.
Lastly, here are a few quirks about me:
1) I’m a huge Batman fanatic.
2) I’m a kid a heart.
3) I still watch cartoons.
4) My favorite singers are Christina Aguilera, Sara Bareilles, Gabe Bondoc and Usher.
5) Favorite Singing Group is Boyz II Men
6) My favorite TV shows are Teen Wolf and Scandal.
7) I love Young Adult Literature.
8) My motto is “Almost Doesn’t Count, Dare To Dream.”
